Rubyfish occur at a wide range of depths but seem most common between 200 and 400 metres. The species also occurs off southern Australia, South Africa and around banks in the southern Indian and south-east Atlantic oceans. They feed on mid-water crustaceans, salps and fish. Rubyfish are thought to be slow-growing and long-lived. Little is known about where they spawn, or their spawning cycle.
