The brown seaweed Undaria pinnatifida has a central stem along the blade, which is divided into fingers. Mature specimens have a frilly sporophyll (reproductive tissue) on the stem below the blade, seen here as a dark clump. This is just above the holdfast – the root-like anchor that attaches the kelp to a firm surface. This specimen has a greenish tinge.
