This giant octopus is the largest known. It was trawled from a depth of 920 metres near the Chatham Islands in 2001, and delivered as a frozen, 61-kilogram lump to scientists at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in Wellington. It is the first confirmed specimen of the deep-water gelatinous octopus Haliphron atlanticus in New Zealand waters.
