Here, survivors of the sunken Rangitane await rescue on the Pacific island of Emirau. Five months after laying mines to sink the Niagara, the German raider Orion sank the 16,000-ton liner Rangitane on 27 November 1940, using guns and torpedoes. Fifteen people died but most were taken to Emirau, where they were picked up.
