Taken about 1920, this photograph shows the successful setting of a gill net at Houhora Harbour, Northland. Gill nets are set in the water for a period of time, or drawn through it, trapping fish by the gills. Much early fishing in New Zealand was gill netting from small boats in harbours and estuaries.
