New Zealand scientists discovered that adult Buller’s albatrosses obtained food for their chicks from the seas around the South Island, flying back to the Snares Islands, 130 kilometres south-west of Stewart Island, to deliver it. They investigated the birds’ vomit in July and August 2001 to determine what they ate: 72% dined on salps.
