Story: Rock, limestone and clay

The Desert Road

The Desert Road

Dominated by Mt Ngāuruhoe, the Desert Road from Waiōuru to Tūrangi is exposed to snowfalls and low temperatures in winter. On stretches of road such as this there is an increased risk of ice forming on shady corners. Road engineers lay down different sizes and shapes of rock chip to ensure maximum tyre traction.
