Fire and Emergency New Zealand personnel use a hose to dampen a hot spot during the 2024 Port Hills fire in Christchurch.

The wildfire began on 14 February and burned over an area of 700 hectares, forcing the evacuation of more than 100 properties and destroying one home. At the height of the fire, more than 130 firefighters, 15 helicopters and two fixed-wing aircraft were battling the blaze. Firefighting efforts continued for the next three weeks as hot spots continued to burn above and below ground. The cause of the fire is unclear.
