The government ketch, New Golden Hind, set off from Wellington on its second uranium survey on 18 January 1946. Although the first expedition had been a wartime secret, the second was well publicised, with cabinet ministers pleased to take part in official photographs. Those standing at front left are Minister of Works Bob Semple and Minister in Charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research D. G. Sullivan. Seated are physicist Jim McCahon, geologist Dick Willett, and H. H. Allan, Director of Botany Division. In the back are a ship’s officer, A. C. S. Wright, Captain Cole, the radio operator, physicist Kemp Fowler, the minister’s secretary, geologist Harold Wellman, Director of the Geological Survey Mont Ongley, and physicist Graham Fraser.
