Story: Friedlander, Marti

Eglinton Valley, 1970

Eglinton Valley, 1970

First published in Marti Friedlander and James McNeish’s Larks in a Paradise (1974), this much reproduced and entrancing photograph has become an ‘iconic’, quintessentially New Zealand image, with those sheep, sentient and wary, appearing to question the photographer’s and viewers’ presence there.
