Ponsonby, 1971

Ponsonby, 1971

Marti Friedlander’s 1971 photograph documents the moment in time when Ponsonby was a low income suburb, with a large Polynesian population, and much of its low rental housing stock looked tired. Subsequent gentrification forced Māori and Pacific communities out of Auckland’s older inner-city residential areas to the outlying suburbs.
