
Marti Friedlander’s 1971 photograph documents the moment in time when Ponsonby was a low income suburb, with a large Polynesian population, and much of its low rental housing stock looked tired. Subsequent gentrification forced Māori and Pacific communities out of Auckland’s older inner-city residential areas to the outlying suburbs.

While this photo is titled “Ponsonby 1971” it was taken in Ireland Street, Freemans Bay. Near 5 Ireland St (first visible house on right of photo). The gasometers are visible, as is apartment building across the harbour (Stanley Point Road?)
