Story: Bell, Marie

Marie Bell at Mātauranga School

Marie Bell at Mātauranga School

Marie Bell poses for the camera in a dress made by Mātauranga School pupils under the supervision of parent Myrla Kernick, in December 1969. The school, co-founded by Marie, was a parent co-operative and became one of the most progressive primary schools in the country. It espoused low adult-to-child ratios, parent participation, and educating children as individuals within a rich environment of activities, as well as freedom from corporal punishment.
