Since the 2000 Sydney Olympics the gender split of New Zealand competitors in the Olympic Games has been about even. This reflects the International Olympic Committee’s commitment to advancing gender equality by opening up previously restricted events to women. At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, New Zealand won 18 medals, 11 by women. Eliza McCartney won bronze in the pole vault, an event first contested by women at an Olympics in Sydney in 2000.
