This photograph of Mākereti (Maggie) Papakura was taken around 1910, probably in her home at Whakarewarewa, Rotorua. Papakura authored a Guide to the hot lakes district in 1905, and her research for her thesis at Oxford University was published after her death as The old-time Maori. It was an early example of an academic book by a Māori writer.
