This team of social statisticians worked at the Department of Statistics. In the back row are (left to right) Doug Hannan, Jill Carter, Paul Brown, Coyle Kelly, Laurence Wong and June Vize. In the front row are (left to right) Margaret Shields (later a cabinet minister), Ann Soon, Mick Solomon and Whetu Rolleston. Social statistics collected by the government continue to form an important base for social-science research and for formulating social policy.
