Sociology was first offered at the University of Auckland in 1968, but only as a postgraduate subject. According to Keith Sinclair, who wrote a history of the university, this was because sociology (along with all other social sciences) had been viewed with suspicion and actively resisted by senior academics for some time. The following decades such doubts were overcome and sociology was taught at undergraduate level. This is a glimpse of a sociology seminar at Auckland in the 1970s.
