Mrs Duncan, in the foreground, is shown here with other workers at a New Zealand munitions factory during the Second World War. The Industrial Psychology Division (IPD) of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) concentrated much of its research on munitions factories, with an emphasis on women workers. The IPD was formed in 1942, when New Zealand felt threatened by the Japanese advance. IPD research was aimed at finding ways of enhancing production in New Zealand factories to assist the war effort.
