The Marsden Cross

The Marsden Cross

This cross marks the location where Samuel Marsden preached his first sermon in New Zealand, on Christmas Day 1814 in Rangihoua Bay in the Bay of Islands. Marsden preached from Luke 2:10, 'Behold I bring you good tidings of great joy.' Marsden had come to the Bay of Islands to establish a mission to bring Christianity to New Zealand and to Māori in particular. Rangihoua was the home of the Ngāpuhi chief Ruatara, who provided initial support for the mission.
