In the early 20th century there was a steady trickle of New Zealand artists arriving in England. Many travelled further as part of a network of English-speaking artists spread through Europe. This group, photographed in the Netherlands, was led by English watercolourist Norman Garstin (sitting, centre left). Sitting on the other side of the small bridge is New Zealand artist Frances Hodgkins. One of those standing is probably Dorothy Richmond, another New Zealander. Hodgkins and Richmond returned to Wellington in 1903, where they taught art in a Bowen Street studio. Both studio and teaching were maintained by Richmond after Hodgkins returned to Europe in 1906. Richmond became a widely admired teacher.
