A bright spark of the local recording industry was DJ Rocky Douche, pictured in the control room of Marmalade Studios, the Wellington recording studio that he opened in 1973. Douche had learned the technical side of sound recording by working for the state-owned New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation. He then left to run his own studio, making radio and TV advertisements, and recording local artists such as Shona Laing. Laing's success prompted the studio to set up Marmalade Artists to manage her international career.
