Dr Mark Sagar is director of the Laboratory for Animate Technologies at the University of Auckland. Here he stands beside a computer-driven simulation of a baby's brain, called Baby-X. It tracks the neurochemical reactions that send emotional signals to the face to make it smile, frown or cry. The digital baby is part of an artificial intelligence project that aims to create an electronic consciousness.
