Richard Nunns of Nelson (left), originally a jazz musician, later became expert at making and playing traditional Māori instruments (taonga puoro). He is seen here in 1999, playing a pūkāea with leading British jazz saxophonist Evan Parker. The two men improvised on their chosen instruments to make the 2004 album Rangirua.
