An interpretative sign marks Potters Number Two, a goldmining site in the Kōpūwai Conservation Area, Central Otago. A number of alluvial gold mining claims were worked in this area between the 1860s and 1900s, and some relics of this activity remain on the land, which is a protected historic site cared for by the Department of Conservation (DOC). DOC employs a small number of historians and archaeologists who are stationed in various locations around the country, but who can be deployed anywhere their specialist skills are needed. Their research on sites informs the interpretive signs and brochures that DOC produces for visitors.
