Wellington independent film-maker Costa Botes learned through New Zealand actor Caleb Ross of efforts to save the last purebred Eskimo dogs from extinction. Braving polar bears and bitter cold, Botes shot The last dogs of winter in Hudson Bay in Canada, in 2010. It premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and was then shown at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, the largest event of its kind in the world. Botes has been a full-time film-maker since 1985 and has made many feature films, mainly documentaries.
