In the early 1950s Leo White took a major series of photographs of New Zealand towns and cities from the air. The photographs provide a unique record of the country before the huge urban growth in the later 1950s and 1960s. For example, this one of Napier shows the lack of development on the former inner harbour, which had been raised in the 1931 earthquake and became the future site of the airport. The Alexander Turnbull Library made this valuable collection widely available through digitising the images and publishing them on the National Library website.
