John Mulgan (left) was photographed in Greece in 1943 or 1944 with two unidentified New Zealand soldiers. Mulgan's memorable description of New Zealand troops in Report on experience (1947) reveal his nostalgia and longing for his homeland, and his respect for quiet, capable masculinity – a respect that runs through much New Zealand non-fiction of the 20th century.
