Protest mural

Tauranga graffiti artist Graham Hoete is shown in front of a mural he painted with fellow local artist Owen Dippie in protest against inaction on the Rena disaster in 2011–12. The Rena, a Greek-owned container ship, ran aground on Astrolabe reef near Tauranga in early October 2011, causing devastation to wildlife and marine and coastal environments. As the wreck slowly broke up over the following months, salvors removed the remaining oil, many containers and much of the structure of the ship.
