James Bragge's photo of Wairarapa, 1870s (2nd of 5)

James Bragge's photo of Wairarapa, 1870s

Professional photographer James Bragge expertly recorded the transformation of the environment that followed in the wake of 19th-century colonisation. His photograph of the Wairarapa plain from the Rimutaka Range, taken some time in the 1870s, shows a partially denuded hillside framed by ragged trees in the foreground. The Rimutaka road curves through the valley like a river.
