Story: Poetry

Ursula Bethell at her desk (1st of 2)

Ursula Bethell at her desk

Like Blanche Baughan, Ursula Bethell was born in Surrey, England, and for a time was a social worker. But, unlike Baughan, she grew up in New Zealand (although spending long periods in England) and, although both were born in the 1870s, Bethell's published poetry came later – in the 1920s. However this photograph, taken when she was a young woman, suggests that her literary interests were of long standing.
