Daphne Walker encapsulated the South Seas sound popular in the 1950s. She was spotted at a talent quest in 1949 and was soon recording with Bill Wolfgramm and his band. Her first release under her own name was 'Māori brown eyes', in 1954. Walker's rendition of Sam Freedman's song 'Haere mai' was very popular, selling 40,000 copies. In 2000 it was the soundtrack to a television advertisment for Qantas in New Zealand, which introduced a new generation of listeners to Walker's sound.
