The repudiation movement was based in Hawke's Bay and was headed by Hēnare Matua. The movement's newspaper was Te Wananga (1874–78), published under the leadership of Hēnare Tomoana and Karaitiana Takamoana. Its philosophy was based around repudiating unfair leases and land purchases.
