Good design in plastic had a significant effect on New Zealand's rural landscape from 1999, when the Wilson Plastics letterbox began to populate the roadside. Designer Rob Whitfield – whose drawings for the design are shown at top – not only achieved a pleasing form, but created functionality that is appreciated daily by rural posties. About 50,000 of the letterboxes were sold in the first decade, and exports to Australia followed.
