Story: Government and sport

Newmarket pool, Auckland

Newmarket pool, Auckland

The swimming pool in Newmarket, Auckland, was built as a Second World War memorial with the assistance of the government subsidy for memorials. Many local authorities built playgrounds and swimming pools in the 1930s, and the war memorial subsidy programme allowed this to continue in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
