Library certificate class, 1961

Library certificate class, 1961

These students are studying for the library certificate at the New Zealand Library School in Wellington in 1961. The lone male in the group is Brian Gilberthorpe from Christchurch. When Gilberthorpe first began working at the Canterbury Public Library in 1954 he was the first young man to be appointed in 15 years. The photo reflects the female domination of librarianship, although this domination did not at the time extend to management level.
