Joanne Lawn competes in the cycling leg of the 2008 New Zealand Ironman. She won the event for the sixth successive time, and went on to win it again in 2010. Lawn began her career as a cyclist and represented New Zealand at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia. American Meredith Kessler subsequently won the New Zealand Ironman on five consecutive occasions, setting a course record of 8 hours 56 minutes 7 seconds in 2016. In 2019 Kessler finished third behind her compatriot Jocelyn McAuley, who improved the course record to 8 hours 53 minutes 10 seconds. In 2020 Kessler came second and improved her personal best at Taupō by 4 seconds – but finished 12½ minutes behind New Zealander Teresa Adam.
