The 1970s feminist movement pushed the idea that girls should be able to play sports previously only played by boys, such as football and rugby. The notion caught on and by the 2000s girls participated in most sports. In team sports, primary-aged girls often played with boys, but at secondary school it was more usual to have girls' teams. This rugby game between Auckland Girls' Grammar School and Tamaki College was played at Coxs Bay Reserve in 2012.
