This group of manuhiri (guests) is waiting to be called onto the marae. They have assembled at the tomokanga (entranceway) with their kaikaranga (caller) to show that they are ready. By this stage the manuhiri would have organised not only their kaikaranga, but also who will give the whaikōrero (speeches) and in what order. Koha (donations) will have been gathered and put into an envelope to be laid on the marae by the final speaker amongst the manuhiri.
