Invercargill's velodrome

Invercargill's velodrome

Until 2006 New Zealand had no facilities to host international track-cycling events. Bad experiences with weather at Invercargill's outside velodrome encouraged locals to build a new indoor facility beside Stadium Southland. Featuring a state-of-the-art wooden floor, it was opened in 2006 at a cost of $11 million. In 2014 a second indoor velodrome of international quality will open at Cambridge, in Waikato. This is the Invercargill ILT Velodrome during the UCI Juniors World Track Cycling Championships on 26 August 2012.
