This aerial photograph shows the new stadium, which was built on railways land in Wellington in the late 1990s and opened in January 2000. Holding up to 36,000 people, the 'Cake Tin', as it became colloquially known, featured all the amenities of sporting stadiums in a professional era – such as large replay screens, an abundance of food and beverage outlets, comfortable seating and corporate boxes. Its corporate name, a reflection of the sponsorship which helped build the stadium, was also characteristic of modern sporting arenas. The stadium, which later changed its name to Westpac Stadium, is the home of the New Zealand rugby sevens in February each year.
