Gold medals for Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan, 2012

New Zealand's first gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics came in the double sculls. Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan won their heat in Olympic record time, but were then beaten into second place in the semi-final. In the final the two South Islanders (Cohen from Invercargill, Sullivan from Picton) put in their trademark storming finish. They were fourth with 500 metres to go, but eventually won by over a second.
