Tear-gassed All Blacks, 1976

All Black Ian Kirkpatrick recovers after being caught in a tear-gas attack in Cape Town in September 1976. The All Blacks were touring South Africa at a time of major civil disruption, particularly in the Soweto district of Johannesburg. New Zealand's continuing sporting contacts with apartheid South Africa, and the presence of New Zealand rugby players there, triggered a boycott of the 1976 Montreal Olympics by many African nations.
