
Yvette Williams is carried on the shoulders of enthusiastic New Zealanders after she won the gold medal for the long jump at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. Williams, who also won gold medals at the Auckland and Vancouver British Empire Games, was the undoubted star of New Zealand athletics in the early 1950s and the first woman to become a national sporting icon.
