Kitchen displays

This photograph of an 1880s kitchen shows how the display of objects can suggest different personalities and interests. To one side of the coal range, china, glasses and silver are neatly arrayed on a dresser, while above the mantelpiece guns and knives are arranged in a pattern. It suggests that both the man and woman of the house had a hand in the decoration of this room.
