Commuters on their way to work on a wet and blustery Wellington day are part of a tidal flow of people into the city, and will flow out again at the end of the day. For many years New Zealand towns were known for their emptiness on the weekends and evenings (apart from Friday, when late-night shopping filled the streets). The extremity of the ebb and flow disappeared once shop trading hours were extended.
