Crowds at Dunedin's Caledonian Ground watch riders warm up before the running of a cash race during a festival tattoo in 1961. During the 1950s and 1960s early evening cycling events could attract huge crowds as they provided a form of entertainment after pubs closed at 6 p.m. The arrival of television in the early 1960s changed this, with people staying at home to watch 'the box' instead.
