Admired for his ‘cheerfulness and unwearying industry’, Charles Knight practised as a doctor, and then became a leading civil servant, rising to the position of auditor general. He was also a keen botanist, publishing scientific papers, corresponding with Joseph Hooker at Kew Gardens in London, and amassing a large collection of lichens.
