International Heatway Rally, 1973

International Heatway Rally, 1973

The fast and nimble Ford Escort RS1600 dominated the 1973 International Heatway Rally of New Zealand. First staged in 1971, this was the most important rallying event held in New Zealand to that date. In 1973 the RS1600s, driven by Hannu Mikkola and Jim Porter of Finland, and New Zealanders Mike Marshall and Arthur McWatts, finished first and second respectively. This photo shows Marshall and McWatts during the last forest stage of the rally.
