Members of the 28th (Māori) Battalion are shown in January 1946 sitting down to a welcome-home hākari (feast), complete with bottles of beer. In the aftermath of the Second World War legal restrictions on Māori drinking were lifted, in part because of admiration for the Māori contribution to the war effort.
