In April 2012 Ripe Cafe in Wellington made headlines when it displayed a sign asking customers to put down their cellphones and take off their headphones when ordering a coffee. Other retailers agreed the problem was widespread and offensive. One said, 'It is a bit rude, especially when people don't look you in the eye when you're serving them. They don't look up or connect; it is a bit disheartening.'
