Half-holiday tennis game, 1906 (2nd of 2)

Half-holiday tennis game, 1906

These tennis players are enjoying a half-holiday at Raurimu, in 1906. By the early 20th century many workers had a guaranteed weekly half-holiday. For those with a Saturday half-holiday, Saturday afternoon became the time for both competitive and recreational sports. Half-holidays allowed people to play without drawing criticism from the guardians of the sabbath.
